Native to the Caribbean this evergreen shrub thrives in dry, rocky habitats, coastal scrublands, and open woodlands, where it can withstand high winds and saline conditions. It typically grows between 6 and 10 feet tall, producing rigid, holly-like leaves with sharply toothed margins. Its growth habit is upright and somewhat opent. Flowering occurs intermittently throughout the year, with the peak season often following rainy periods, and the flower heads can measure up to 2 inches in diameter. The blooms consist of tightly packed tubular florets in vibrant shades of orange, which transition to paler tones as they age. Photographed in Florida.
