Alternanthera porrigens
Alternanthera porrigens is a herbaceous species native to the Andes. It has a weedy, sprawling habit and is often found growing among other vegetation, particularly in open, sun-exposed slopes. The leaves are small and elliptical with green to purplish hues, while its tiny flowers appear in clustered heads ranging in color from pink to reddish-purple. These flowers are held loosely on wiry, spreading stems that branch freely and form diffuse colonies. This species is adapted to thin, nutrient-poor soils and tolerates drought conditions well. Photographed in Ecuador.
