Aeonium arboreum (Tree Aeonium)

Native to the Canary Islands and southwestern Morocco, this evergreen succulent shrub grows about 3 to 5 feet tall. Its branches end in rosettes of fleshy leaves, and large conical clusters of small yellow flowers rise above them. A flowering rosette dies after setting seed, while other branches continue growing. The species has naturalized in California, the Mediterranean region, New Zealand, and southern Australia. It is a minor environmental weed in Western Australia, particularly in coastal areas and sand dunes. It holds the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Photographed in Bogotá and the Cocora Valley, Colombia.
