Aegiphila ferruginea is a tree species native to high-altitude cloud forests in the Andean regions of Colombia and Ecuador, typically found at elevations between 2,000 and 3,500 meters. This species is recognized by its leathery, opposite leaves and distinctive floral arrangements, which appear in dense, globular clusters located in the leaf axils or at branch tips. The flowers are tubular and cream to pale yellow in color, with protruding stamens and a subtle bilabiate structure. The calyces are often rust-colored or reddish-brown, giving rise to the species name “ferruginea,” meaning “rust-colored.” Photographed in Ecuador.
