Aechmea warasii

Native to EspĆrito Santo in southeastern Brazil, this plant is a perennial bromeliad that grows on trees in humid forests. Its strap-shaped leaves form a funnel-shaped rosette and have finely toothed edges. A dark purple flower stalk curves downward, carrying a hanging cluster of flowers about eight to ten inches long. The violet petals have white margins and turn deep red as they age. Bright red berries provide lasting color after the flowers fade. It spreads by producing new rosettes on horizontal stems. Photographed in Florida.
