Aechmea retusa is a striking bromeliad species native to the Andean regions of Ecuador and Colombia, often found growing terrestrially or as an epiphyte in cloud forests and lower montane rainforests. It produces a horizontal to slightly arching inflorescence with bright red, overlapping bracts and bicolored tubular flowers that are green with dark purple bands and pale cream tips. The overall appearance is highly ornamental, and its flower clusters emerge from a tight rosette of leathery, spiny-margined green leaves. The species prefers cool, humid environments and is well adapted to shaded forest conditions. Photographed in Ecuador.
