Phlox paniculata (Garden Phlox)
Native to the north-central and eastern United States, this clump-forming herbaceous perennial usually grows 2 to 4 feet tall. Fragrant flowers gather in large clusters from summer into fall, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Garden cultivars offer white, pink, purple, and red flowers. It can be propagated by division, root or stem cuttings, or seeds, although seedlings of cultivars may differ from their parents. It has been introduced to parts of Canada, Great Britain, Germany, and other temperate regions. Photographed in Colombia.
