Masdevallia veitchiana

Native to Peru, this perennial orchid has upright, narrow to oblong leaves and can grow on the ground. Arching flower stalks reach about sixteen inches long and carry a single, long-lasting flower. Orange sepals covered with fine purple hairs extend into long tails, giving the flower an overall length of up to eight inches. Photographed in Colombia.
