A bright yellow Oyedaea verbesinoides flower head spreads rays around a reddish-brown centre

Oyedaea verbesinoides

Native from Costa Rica to Venezuela, this shrub or tree grows in humid tropical habitats and can reach about forty feet tall. Its yellow daisy-like flower heads have spreading ray florets surrounding a central disk. In Venezuelan cloud forests it is a fast-growing, short-lived pioneer that colonizes openings and young secondary vegetation. It has been used in reforestation, and its flowers provide pollen and nectar valued in honey production. It can be propagated from seed. Photographed in Colombia.
