Hippeastrum machupijchense

Native to Cusco in Peru, this bulbous perennial grows in humid mountain forest in the Urubamba basin at about 6,560 to 6,890 feet. Stout, leafless flowering stems carry large, funnel-shaped flowers, and plants can flower while leafless during the dry season. It has a very restricted wild range around Machu Picchu, where deliberately set fires threaten its habitat. The plant is poisonous if eaten, especially the bulbs. Photographed in Peru.
