Gardenia nitida
Native to western tropical Africa, this shrub or small tree grows in forest habitats and may reach twelve feet tall. Its strongly scented flowers open white and gradually turn yellow. Each flower lasts only a day. The oblong fruits are hard and woody. It is endangered in Benin, where its native rainforest survives in small, threatened fragments. Photographed in Florida.
