Epidendrum megaloclinium flowers hang from a curved stalk with pale lips and brownish segments

Epidendrum megaloclinium

Native to the eastern slopes of the Andes in central Ecuador, this large terrestrial orchid has upright canes that branch near their tops. Dense, hanging flower clusters develop from mature portions of the stems. Flowers open in succession, with twenty to fifty-two blooms eventually open together. Each flower has a broad, heart-shaped lip with prominent ridges and a conspicuous funnel-shaped hood over the column. Photographed in Colombia.
