Lonchocarpus longistylus (Balche)
Native from central Mexico to Honduras, this tropical tree reaches about 33 feet tall and has a dense, rounded crown. Showy lilac to purple flowers occur in clusters, followed by flattened seed pods. It grows in tropical forests, including partly deciduous woodland. The tree holds cultural significance in Maya traditions: its bark is fermented with honey and water to prepare the ritual drink also called balche. Flowering in the Yucatan Peninsula is recorded from November to January, and the tree is also used ornamentally. Its flowers provide nectar and pollen for stingless bees and other wild bees. Photographed in Panama.
