Lobelia laxiflora (Mexican Lobelia)
Native from southern Arizona through Central America to Colombia, this perennial herb or shrub has spreading underground rhizomes. Narrow leaves line upright to arching stems, which can develop a bushy form. Its conspicuous tubular flowers combine orange-red outer surfaces with bright yellow throats and a two-lipped opening. Hummingbirds visit the blossoms for nectar. The flowering stems can reach about three feet tall. Clumps spread into broad colonies, with more vigorous expansion where moisture is abundant. It can be propagated from stem cuttings. It is harmful if eaten and can irritate the skin. Photographed in Peru.
