Leucocasia gigantea (Giant Elephant Ear)

Native from southern China through southeastern Asia to western Malesia, this robust perennial herb grows about 5 to 8 feet tall and has a condensed, creeping stem. Its large, upright leaves are broadly heart-shaped and carried on long, pale green stalks that may have a whitish waxy coating. Several inflorescences arise together, each with a green lower spathe and an erect white upper portion surrounding a pale spadix. Small berries contain numerous seeds. The species grows in wet tropical conditions, including limestone habitats, and is cultivated for its imposing foliage. In Thailand and Indochina, its leaf stalks are used in soups and curries. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation if eaten without proper preparation. Photographed in Colombia.
