Heliconia virginalis

Native to northwestern Ecuador, this perennial heliconia grows from underground rhizomes in humid tropical forest. It grows in primary and secondary forest at middle elevations. Leafy shoots can reach about eleven feet tall and bear leaves roughly three feet long. The flowering structures stand upright, with red bracts sheltering white flowers. Fruits begin yellow and become blue as they ripen. Photographed in Ecuador.
