Helianthus debilis (Beach Sunflower)
Native to the eastern United States and Texas, this annual or short-lived perennial herb has a spreading habit and grows especially well in sunny, sandy ground. Dark green leaves vary in shape but commonly have triangular outlines and irregularly toothed edges. Small sunflower-like heads bear yellow ray florets around a purplish-brown center. In warm climates, the plants can bloom through much of the year. It is useful as a groundcover and for stabilizing coastal dunes. Its flowers attract butterflies. Photographed in Peru.
