Glossoloma medusaeum has clusters of red tubular flowers surrounded by long curled calyx fringes along a hairy upright stem

Glossoloma medusaeum

Native from Costa Rica through Panama to central Peru, this upright herb or subshrub grows in moist mountain forests. Opposite, toothed leaves are green above and often reddish beneath. Groups of tubular flowers develop along the stem at the leaf nodes. The calyx has conspicuously fringed margins, while the hairy corolla is usually red in South American populations and may be pale yellow elsewhere. Fleshy capsules split into two valves to expose numerous small seeds. Photographed in Colombia.
