Gasteranthus pansamalanus
Native to southern Mexico, Guatemala, southwestern Colombia and Ecuador, this upright herb or soft-stemmed subshrub grows in moist forests. Opposite leaves have finely toothed margins and hairs along their lower veins. Solitary orange flowers develop on stalks in the leaf axils. The flower tube has a small basal spur and a conspicuously inflated pouch near its narrow opening. Hummingbirds visit the flowers for nectar. Fleshy, oval capsules split into two valves when mature. Photographed in Colombia.
