Veronica spicata (Spiked Speedwell)

Native from Europe to central Siberia and northwestern China, this clump-forming perennial herb belongs to the plantain family. Garden plants commonly grow about 2 to 3 feet tall. Upright stems carry opposite, toothed leaves and dense, tapering spikes of small blue to violet flowers. Cultivated varieties also offer pink or white blooms. The flowers attract bees and butterflies. Photographed in Florida.
