Smallanthus sonchifolius

A perennial herb native to the Andes, Smallanthus sonchifolius develops tall leafy stems from an underground system of edible storage roots. Orange-yellow flower heads have a ring of broad ray florets around a darker central disk. Large opposite leaves are triangular to heart-shaped and covered with fine hairs. Photographed in Colombia.
