Sesuvium maritimum
A succulent annual herb native from the central and eastern United States to Belize and the Caribbean, it forms low mats or ascending, much-branched stems. Its small fleshy leaves are smooth, and tiny flowers are white or pink inside. It grows on sandy shores, salt flats and the edges of mangrove swamps. Small capsules open with a lid to release black seeds. Photographed in Peru.
