Salvia hispanica

An annual herb native to Mexico and Central America, Salvia hispanica has upright square stems and opposite toothed leaves. Compact flower clusters form at the stem tips, where tiny blue-violet two-lipped flowers emerge between overlapping green bracts. The mature fruits contain the small seeds commonly known as chia.
