Polygonum nesomii slender pale flower spikes on wiry stems spreading across sandy ground

Polygonum nesomii

Polygonum nesomii is a low perennial herb native to Florida. Wiry branching stems spread across open sandy ground and carry many narrow leaves. Small pale flowers are arranged along slender terminal spikes. The species is adapted to dry pinelands and sandhill habitats, where periodic disturbance helps maintain open conditions. Its compact growth and fine-textured inflorescences can be easily overlooked among surrounding ground vegetation. Photographed in Florida.
