Bomarea patinii

Native to Colombia and northern Ecuador, this perennial twining vine grows from tuberous roots and can reach about 10 to 13 feet tall. In Colombia, it occurs in the Andes between about 5,900 and 10,800 feet, growing in open areas and along roadsides. Its oval to lance-shaped leaves have rusty-colored hairs underneath, and their stalks twist to turn the original upper surface downward. Large, dense clusters carry red flowers with longer inner petals, sometimes yellow within and marked with dark spots. Rounded seed capsules contain seeds with a red-orange fleshy coating. Photographed in the Chocó region of Colombia.
