Dendrobium goldschmidtianum

An epiphytic orchid, it is native to islands off Taiwan and the northern Philippines. It grows on trees in moist forest. Dense clusters of magenta to purplish-red flowers arise at nodes along older, leafless canes. Dark purple veins mark the petals and sepals, while the central column is yellow. Its upright canes can reach about 3 feet tall. In cultivation, the main winter flowering can be followed by further flushes through the year. Water needs decrease when the plant is resting between periods of active growth. Photographed in Florida.
