Close-up of a Delonix elata flower with yellow petals and long, curved red stamens extending outward against a blurred natural background
Delonix elata

Delonix elata is a deciduous tree native to parts of East Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and the Arabian Peninsula. It is closely related to the flamboyant tree Delonix regia but differs in its yellow to pale cream-colored blossoms rather than bright red. This species grows in dry deciduous forests and semi-arid regions, often reaching a height of 30 to 50 feet. Its flowers are characterized by broad, crinkled petals and long, showy stamens that give them a striking appearance. Beyond its ornamental use, parts of the plant have been traditionally employed in folk medicine, where extracts from its bark and leaves are reported to have anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. Photographed in Florida.
