Croton punctatus branch with clusters of small white flowers and elongated green leaves covered in fine hairs
Croton punctatus

Croton punctatus, commonly called seaside croton, is native to coastal regions of the southeastern United States, the Caribbean, and parts of Central America. It is a perennial shrub that thrives in sandy soils near dunes and coastal scrublands, where it helps stabilize soil against erosion. The plant is characterized by its oblong leaves that are densely covered with fine hairs, giving them a textured, gray-green appearance, and by its small clusters of creamy white flowers that emerge at the ends of branches. Seaside croton is valued as a hardy dune plant because of its tolerance to salt spray, wind, and poor soils. Photographed in Florida.
