Close-up of Pycnosorus globosus flower showing a perfectly round golden-yellow ball made of tiny clustered florets
Pycnosorus globosus

Pycnosorus globosus, commonly known as billy buttons or drumsticks, is native to Australia. It typically grows in open grasslands and dry habitats, forming upright clumps with long, slender stems topped by spherical inflorescences that reach about one inch in diameter. The flowerheads are composed of hundreds of tightly packed florets, creating a dense and uniform ball-like structure that maintains its color and form even after drying. Because of this durability, Pycnosorus globosus has become a species in the floral trade, particularly for dried and preserved arrangements, where it is marketed under names such as “Golf Beauty.” In addition to its ornamental use, its long-lasting nature has made it an export product from Australia. Photographed in Florida.
