A close-up of a bright yellow Coreopsis gladiata flower with slender petals radiating from a dark central disk
Coreopsis gladiata

Coreopsis gladiata is native to the southeastern United States. It typically inhabits moist pinelands, bogs, and savannas, often thriving in areas with seasonal flooding or poorly drained soils. This perennial wildflower is recognized by its showy golden-yellow ray florets surrounding a dark brown to nearly black central disk. The flowering stems, which can reach up to three feet tall, usually produce solitary blooms that appear in late summer to fall, adding vibrant color to wetlands and open meadows. Unlike many other Coreopsis species that have branching inflorescences, C. gladiata is distinguished by its mostly unbranched stems bearing a single large flower. Photographed in Florida.
