Cordia lutea
Native to Colombia, Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands and Peru, this plant is a shrub or small tree of seasonally dry tropical regions. It has a dark, often twisted trunk and dark green leaves. Clusters of yellow, bell- to funnel-shaped flowers can appear through much of the year. The rounded fruits ripen white and have sticky flesh surrounding the seeds. In Galápagos populations, plants bear flowers with differing positions of the style and stamens. In the Galápagos, carpenter bees are important daytime pollinators, while moths pollinate the flowers at night. Photographed in Ecuador.
