Bulbophyllum lilacinum is a small to medium-sized epiphytic orchid species native to parts of Southeast Asia, where it inhabits warm to intermediate, humid forests at low to mid elevations. It is a member of the diverse genus Bulbophyllum, known for its unusual floral structures and varied pollination strategies, often involving flies and other small insects. This species produces a distinctive, pendulous inflorescence composed of numerous small, tightly spaced flowers arranged in a cylindrical spike, giving it a bottlebrush-like appearance. Each individual flower is typically lavender to lilac in color, with delicate petals and sepals that are sometimes slightly translucent. The flowers can number in the dozens per spike and often open sequentially or nearly simultaneously, creating a striking visual effect. The plant’s pseudobulbs are relatively small, each producing a single, leathery leaf. Photographed in Florida
