Brillantaisia cicatricosa
Brillantaisia cicatricosa is native to central and southern Africa. This upright perennial herb or subshrub can reach heights of up to 6 feet, developing square stems and opposite leaves. The flowers are notable for their distinctive structure: the upper petal forms a prominent curved, tubular hood often covered with fine hairs, while the lower petals form a rounded, lobed landing platform, aiding pollination by specific insects. The blooms are typically purple to violet with lighter or darker markings. Photographed in Florida.
