Bauhinia grandidieri flower with five narrow, pale purple petals and protruding yellow-tipped stamens surrounded by small rounded green leaflets
Bauhinia grandidieri

Native to Madagascar, Bauhinia grandidieri is a shrub that thrives in dry, open habitats. It is adapted to semi-arid conditions, often growing in sandy or rocky soils, and reaches heights between 6 and 13 feet. The species produces distinctive flowers characterized by five narrow petals in shades of pale lavender to light violet, each surrounding a central column of prominent stamens tipped with bright yellow anthers. While its natural range is restricted to Madagascar, it is occasionally cultivated ornamentally. The plant’s leaves are small, rounded, and paired. In its native environment, Bauhinia grandidieri contributes to the floral diversity of Madagascar’s spiny forest and dry scrub ecosystems. Photographed in Florida.
