Two bright pink Barnadesia arborea flowers with elongated, slightly frayed petals and prominent central stamens, attached to a woody stem with green leaves
Barnadesia arborea

Native to the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, Barnadesia arborea is a woody shrub or small tree in the family Asteraceae, adapted to high-altitude cloud forests and Andean scrub between roughly 6,500 and 11,500 feet. This species produces striking pink to magenta inflorescences composed of long, narrow ray florets surrounding a cluster of disc florets, a trait characteristic of its genus.
The plant’s leaves are simple, alternately arranged, and often tipped with a small spine, an adaptation likely serving as herbivore deterrence. Photographed in Ecuador.
