Endemic to Cuba and typically found in dry forests, limestone hills, and rocky slopes, this solitary palm can reach over 30 feet in height and is characterized by a stout gray trunk often marked with persistent leaf bases. It produces massive inflorescences comprised of hundreds of bright yellow unisexual flowers arranged on long pendant branches, with male and female flowers occurring on the same plant but in different zones of the same structure. The fruit is a greenish drupe with fibrous pulp, and the seed inside is valued for its oil content. Its trunks have historically been used in rural construction and fencing, and its fibrous leaves in thatching. Photographed in Florida.
