Dense shrubs and long grasses typical of the Andean páramo thrive under an overcast sky in the high Andes
Páramo of Ecuador

The páramo covers approximately 5% of Ecuador’s national territory, making it one of the most extensive alpine ecosystems in the country. Found between elevations of roughly 10,500 to 14,800 feet, Ecuador’s páramos are located mainly in the high Andes, stretching from the northern to southern regions. These areas experience cold temperatures, high humidity, and significant rainfall, with soils that retain water and release it slowly, making them essential for Ecuador's hydrological systems.

Several major national parks and reserves in Ecuador encompass significant areas of páramo. These include Cotopaxi National Park, Antisana Ecological Reserve, El Ángel Ecological Reserve, Cajas National Park, Sangay National Park, and Llanganates National Park.
