This striking plant, native to tropical Africa and Asia, is known for its vibrant, fiery flowers, which feature recurved petals in shades of red, yellow, and orange, creating a flame-like appearance that has led to its common name, flame lily. Cultivated as an ornamental in tropical and subtropical gardens, it reaches around 3 to 6 feet in height with the support of tendrils on its leaf tips that allow it to cling to surrounding vegetation. Highly toxic due to the presence of colchicine, though it has been traditionally used in limited, controlled medicinal applications for treating ailments like gout and inflammation. Recognized as the national flower of Zimbabwe. Photographed in Florida.
