Cluster of bright red star-shaped flowers blooming on the spiny green stems of Cleistocactus samaipatanus
Cleistocactus samaipatanus

Cleistocactus samaipatanus is a cactus native to Bolivia. It is a columnar cactus with slender, branching stems that can reach several feet in length, often leaning or sprawling as they mature. The stems are densely covered in short golden to brown spines, giving the plant a bristly texture. Its most notable feature is its vibrant tubular flowers, which measure about 2 inches long and display an intense red to reddish-orange color with numerous narrow petals that open into a starburst shape. Unlike many cactus species that produce flowers rarely or under strict conditions, this species is known to flower profusely in cultivation once maturet. Cleistocactus samaipatanus is also known to be hardy compared to other tropical cacti, tolerating cooler temperatures as long as it is kept dry. Several hybrids and cultivated forms exist, selected for heavier blooming and different growth habits. Photographed in Peru.
