Hailing from a lineage that traces back from the U.S. to Tropical America, the perennial vine resembles the cultivated cucumber, showcasing a similar leaf shape and growth patterns, adorned with miniature yellow flowers​​.
The distribution of this plant is quite extensive. The creeping cucumber bears fruits that are about one to two centimeters long, resembling miniature watermelons but with a distinct cucumber aroma and taste. When young and light green, these fruits are crisp and are often added to salads or consumed as is. However, as they mature and darken in color, they tend to lose their appeal becoming mushy. There's a fine line between its edibility and toxicity as it’s believed that upon ripening, the fruit may act as a laxative. Photographed in the department of Quindio, Colombia.
