Red Gerbera flower head with a pale inner ring and dark central disk

Gerbera jamesonii

Native to northeastern South Africa and Eswatini, this herbaceous perennial forms a low rosette of leaves. Large, daisy-like flower heads rise on long stalks and are usually red, with yellow, orange, white, and pink forms also occurring. Flowering is often strongest in spring and autumn in suitable climates. The species is a parent of many modern garden gerbera hybrids and is grown in borders, containers, and for cut flowers. Photographed in Colombia.
