Phoenix canariensis rusty-orange inflorescences
Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm)

Endemic to the Canary Islands off Northwestern Africa. This species, a relative of the true date palm, stands as the natural symbol of the Canary Islands alongside the canary bird, A palm with a 30-foot trunk signifies approximately 60 years of growth. This palm is a large, solitary species. The fruit it bears is an oval drupe, yellow to orange in color, and while the pulp is edible, it's not highly regarded for consumption compared to other dates. Cultivation of this palm is successful in Mediterranean and humid subtropical climates. It can withstand temperatures just below freezing. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
