Carludovica palmata originates from Southern Mexico to Bolivia, thriving primarily in wet tropical biomes. Despite its common name, it's not a true palm but bears a palm-like appearance. This evergreen perennial can reach a height and spread of 6 feet. The plant's recognition largely comes from its robust stems that yield strong, flexible, and durable fibers utilized in crafting Panama hats, cigar cases, small bags, and mats. Its leaves find purpose as thatch or are fashioned into brooms, while the petiole fibers are employed for cordage, lashing materials, and traps.
