Crax rubra (Great Curassow)

The Great Curassow, is large and pheasant-like, primarily found in the Neotropical rainforests stretching from eastern Mexico through Central America to western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. These birds, known for their impressive size, measure between 31 to 39 inches in length and weigh around 6.8 to 10.6 pounds, with females slightly smaller than males. The male Great Curassow is distinctive, sporting black plumage with a curly crest, a white belly, and a yellow knob on its bill. In contrast, female Great Curassows exhibit three color morphs: barred, rufous, and black, each with unique patterns and colorations in their plumage. In their natural habitat, these birds are mainly ground-foragers, preferring fruits, figs, arthropods, and occasionally small vertebrates like rodents. Their diet varies regionally; for instance, in Tamaulipas, they feed largely on the fruit of Spondias mombin, whereas in other areas, they may favor the red berries of Chione trees. Interestingly, unlike other cracids such as guans, the Great Curassow typically feeds on fallen fruit rather than plucking it directly from trees. This species is monogamous, with males typically constructing small nests of leaves for egg-laying. The Great Curassow faces significant conservation challenges. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the species as vulnerable, primarily due to habitat loss and overhunting. Their natural habitats, such as lowland humid forests and mangroves, are diminishing at an alarming rate, and the bird's meat, considered a delicacy, makes them a target for hunters. Population of the Great Curassow is estimated to be below 50,000. Their role in the ecosystem is significant, not just for their unique physical characteristics and behaviors, but also for their ecological functions like seed dispersal and maintaining healthy forest floors.
