A perennial aquatic plant native to the American continents. Found in a variety of wetlands from eastern Canada to Argentina. The flowers have purple hues and yellow markings. The plant’s reproductive strategy includes tristylous flowers, meaning there are three different style lengths within the population, promoting cross-pollination. In addition to sexual reproduction, Pickerelweed can propagate asexually via branching rhizomes, allowing for the formation of large, expansive clonal stands. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Furthermore, the young leafstalks of the plant can be consumed raw or cooked, and the seeds are edible either raw or ground into a grain. Photographed in the department of Quindio, Colombia.
