Hibiscus x rosa-sinensis
Developed in cultivation in the South Pacific, this evergreen shrub is derived from Hibiscus cooperi and Hibiscus kaute. Cultivars have single, semi-double or double flowers in red, pink, orange, yellow and white, often with contrasting centers. In single flowers, a prominent staminal column projects beyond the petals. Individual blooms generally last only a day or two, but plants can flower over an extended period.
It is Malaysia’s national flower. Photographed in Colombia.
