Grewia occidentalis

Originating from Southern Tropical and Southern Africa, this plant, commonly known as Lavender Star Flower, is a scrambling shrub. It's particularly known for its star-shaped pink to purple flowers, later giving way to distinctive four-lobed edible fruits. Medicinally, the plant has a rich traditional use, especially in southern Africa, where it's utilized to ease childbirth, hasten labor, and as ethnoveterinary medicine. It's also used in treating various ailments including bladder issues, impotence, infertility, respiratory infections, as well as for the healing of sores and wounds. Phytochemical studies have revealed the presence of flavonoids, lipids, phenolics, tannins, and triterpenoids in different parts of the plant. Furthermore, pharmacological research has identified a range of properties including antibacterial, antigonococcal, antifungal, anti-HIV, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and uterotonic activities from the crude extracts and isolated phytochemical compounds of the plant. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
