Costus pulverulentus

Native from Mexico through Central America to Ecuador, and in Cuba, this rhizomatous perennial herb grows in moist forests and clearings. Pointed flower spikes carry overlapping red to orange bracts, often with fraying edges. Tubular flowers appear throughout the year, with the single stamen extending beyond the lip. Photographed in Colombia.
